Getting to Know Our Team: Gary Serra

Posted on September 27, 2017

Gary Serra dreamt of being a Vancouver real estate agent since he was child and has worked hard to become a consistently top performing agent in Vancouver. After creating a foundation of success for himself, he went from being Gary Serra to being Gary Serra & Associates and built an incredible team around him.

Gary currently has three other real estate agents on his team, plus an office manager and a small digital team. All of the agents on his team share something in common: a love of real estate and a belief in ‘treating others as you would like to be treated.’

We’ll be introducing everyone on the team here on the blog in the coming weeks, but for now, let’s get to know Gary a little better. We sat down with Gary to ask him a few questions. You can watch the full video or check out Gary’s answers below.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

As cheesy as it sounds, I actually wanted to be a realtor from when I was a young boy. I remember meeting a Vancouver real estate agent that represented my parents and their house, and I thought it was such a glamorous job. I just thought it was the coolest job.

What’s your favourite part of being a real estate agent?

My favourite part is definitely the opportunity to help clients through different stages of their lives. It’s such an honour to help somebody get into their first place, and then as their life changes and they need to go into a larger home or they start a family – it’s such an amazing thing to be a part of.

If you had to guess, how many phones calls, texts, and emails do you get in a day?

Too many – but I love what I do so it doesn’t matter. I would say easily between 150-200 in total. Thankfully I have help! I have an amazing office manager so everything gets taken care of and nothing falls through the cracks.

If your childhood had a smell, what would it be?

Without a doubt, it would be perm solution! My mom was a hairstylist for over forty years and she had ladies that came to the house. She would do their hair in a little salon she had, so many times when I came home from school or what have you, I would walk in the door and I would literally be bombarded with the smell of perm solution. I always knew when there was a lady in the chair.

What do you love about living in Vancouver?

There are lots of things I love about living in Vancouver. I’m born and raised here so it’s really all I know in terms of a place to live, but what I can say I know compared to other places I’ve traveled throughout the world is that we are so culturally diverse here. With that, all the gifts that come from that like amazing food and so many diversities of people and their traditions. I think it’s great to have the world at our doorstep.

What was your very first job?

My very first job was downright down and dirty, you could say. I was literally fourteen and it was an after-school job. I was a cleaner essentially in my dad’s mechanic shop. My dad worked for a trucking company as a heavy duty diesel mechanic, so I would get suited in overalls and all this gear and power wash the entire mechanic shop from top to bottom. I was making I think like $4 or $5 an hour, but you know, it really set the tone for me of a good work ethic so I’m really grateful for it.
